Omodos, beautiful Cypriot mountain village on wine route

Omodos

Omodos, the land of wine, beautiful old houses and cozy streets. There is no way you will not like this mountain village.

This is one of the Cypriot villages you have to visit. And if you like wine, then you are lucky, since Omodos is on the wine route here on the island. That means you will find a few good wineries to test the local products. You have the shops in the village and the wineries very close to it if you are going there by car.

But it is not just about the wine. The village is beautiful. Most houses have been renovated, the narrow streets are perfect for a stroll, and the locals are welcoming.

I will never get tired of taking a peek inside the house, since they have windows at the road and admiring the inner courtyards, usually full of flowers.

What to visit in Omodos

Then, you can also visit the wine press museum and the Monastery of Timios Stavros (Holi Cross). There are also some private museums where you get the chance to see how Cypriots used to live and what their houses used to look like in the past.

If you happen to be on the island in the middle of September, you can witness one of the biggest religious fairs, dedicated to the Holy Cross – in September 14th.

When you enter the village, you will first see the big parking lot, and then, no matter which street you choose, you will start a dream walk.

Wineries

There are 6 wineries in Omodos. Some, if not all, have shops in the village; therefore, you can taste their products. You can also visit the actual wineries if you go with a car.

Of all the wineries in the area, my favorite is Zenon. I’ve discovered here a red wine called Marafeftiko Mavro, and if you like red dry, you have to try it.

Also, they gave us the chance to try a fabulous wine, a collection that, years ago, was 50 euros for 1 bottle. So, I believe you will find drinks for all tastes and pockets.

In Omodos you will find many shops where you can buy craft items made by locals and plenty of places to have some local food.

Blue wine of Omodos

In Omodos you will also find blue wine. Like, you will have blue liquid in your glass and the taste will be one of a normal one. It was made by the owners of Linos Winery after some good years of trying to get the right color for their traditional Xinistery

These days, you can also find the wine in some of the supermarkets, and it will be easy to spot it – simply look for a blue wine!

Facts

Omodos is at a distance of 40 km from Limassol and 94 km from Nicosia.

It is situated at an altitude of 810 meters, and it is surrounded by mountaintops. One of them is called Afames, a name you can also find on the wine shelves in Cyprus.
