Lofou. The stone village with a soul

Lofou

A dreamy view, stone houses, one next to another, narrow cobbled streets that take you from one hill to another, a church, two taverns, a small craft brewery, and welcoming people. This is what I found in Lofou and this village stuck to my soul more than any other I visited on the island.

As usual, I missed the “official” entrance to the village and again took the more twisted road, but the view of the sea and Limassol was worth it.

But know that the first entrance to the village will take you directly to a large parking lot, which is also very close to the center of the village. Okay, not that the village is too big anyway, but it is good to know.

Ideal to wander among the houses

I didn’t have a specific route. I just knew I wanted to see the church, the olive oil mill museum, and the village craft brewery. Finally, the tavern in the center, and that’s about it.

At the edge of the village, I came across a hotel. I think it’s the biggest accommodation there. The rooms seem to have a very nice view of the mountain, and from there you can quickly reach the path marked on the maps as a nature walk.

It was very hard for me not to enter every little street to look at all the houses on the way, but I hope I didn’t miss too many.

I certainly didn’t miss the fire that had just started on the wooden balcony of an uninhabited house. The people from the village came and solved the problem quickly, luckily.

At the brewery and the museum

Toward the end, I also found the craft brewery, tested it, and left with two bottles to explore the problem at my leisure. Kyriakos has been brewing for years, and right before the pandemic, he decided to open a business. He prepared everything and then… he had to wait a little longer. In 2022, when things began to return to normal, he also opened the “shop” in his parents’ house and now happily sells the beer he produces. He will invite you to taste and give you all the details if you ask and want to know more.

I liked what I found there, so I recommend if you end up in Lofou look for it. It’s close to the center, but on a side street.

You can find the brewery HERE

A stone’s throw from the brewery, you will also find the museum, where you can see how olive oil was made until recently. The entrance is free, and you can try as much as you want to move the big stone wheels. We did not succeed!

Then the last stop was at the tavern in the center. In summer, it also has a terrace outside. If we arrived in December, we stayed beautifully in the warmth inside. Good food, decent portions, prices – like a tavern in the mountains, but not to bankrupt you.

Easy to get to Lofou

All in all, I really liked Lofou. That it was because of the good people, or it was from the good food, I don’t know exactly, but I definitely want to get there again, and it made it to my list of villages that you must see if you go for a walk on the island.

Don’t miss the street that surrounds the village and offers you a dreamy view of the sea. See Limassol and skyscrapers there!

The road to Lofou is in very good condition, even if it is a bit steep at times and with some serpentine. And sometimes the road passes directly on the top of the hill. They are not that many kilometers and there is nothing to be afraid of, plus you pass by the Kouris dam, which you can also see from the plane when you come to the island and recognize it by its dovetail.

And if you want to stay overnight, I saw that there are many houses that offer accommodation, and they all look very good, at least from the outside.

Info:

✔26 km away from Limassol

✔It is at an altitude of 780 meters

✔The construction of the church was completed in 1872.

✔The name comes from the Greek lofos = hill

✔Archaeological evidence discovered around the village shows that the area has been inhabited since the middle of the Bronze Age, so around 2000 BC.

✔In its days of glory, in 1881, the village had 578 inhabitants.

✔The incredible part seems to me that in 2001, only 6 inhabitants were still registered in Lofou. Now it has more than 50 inhabitants after the houses were renovated, and the place turned into a tourist one.

✔In the summer it is visited by people from all over the world, and in the winter it is sought after by locals who come here to relax. There are Cypriots from all over who are “fans” of the place and come here often.
