Larnaca – Mackenzie Beach

Plaja Mackenzie, Larnaca

Mackenzie Beach is sought after because it is the perfect place to watch planes land or take off. And in summer, in high season, there are enough to satisfy any aircraft lover.

In fact, if you have a day flight to Cyprus and are lucky enough to have a window seat facing the shore, you will get a close-up aerial view of the beach I am talking about here.

Airplanes, flamingos and a mosque

Mackenzi Beach ends right at the airport fence, but if you want to film a takeoff, you might be chased away by airport security. Also from Mackenzie beach, if you go out to the main street – it’s a few minutes’ walk – you will see the salt lake of Larnaca.

In the summer time you will see just a big expanse of salt. In the winter, however, after the rains start on the island, it fills with water and somewhere around Decembe, the flamingos also appear.

Therefore, then it is also the pilgrimage of the locals to the lake to admire them. In normal times, without a pandemic, there are also tourists who come to enjoy the show offered by the birds.

In the area of the Salt lake you also have the Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque, but a walk there seems suitable only for those who are used to walking a lot.

Accommodation

In the Mackenzie beach area you will find only a few hotels, instead there are many apartments that you can rent online. You have to keep in mind that you won’t find any big supermarket in the area, and for more serious shopping you have to use public transport or, most simply, a taxi.

However, you will be very close, within walking distance, to the Finikoudes area of Larnaca, which is actually the tourist heart of the city.
