Famagusta, view from the walls

Old Famagusta city

The island has two cities that kept their Venetian walls in place until the 21st century: Nicosia and Famagusta. And since I like this piece of land all together, I see everything the same way.

Therefore, the old city of Famagusta will always have a special place in my heart. And if these beautiful walls could talk, I think they would tell us many interesting stories.

Walk after the rain

One day in late November, after a nice short rain, I took a walk around the wall. And where I found a place to climb, I just went to see what the view is like from above. Don’t panic if you’re sick of heights. It’s more than ok.

The temperature slightly over 20 degrees made the walk much more pleasant than during the summer, when the sun will burn everything at lunchtime.

How do you get here?

You can get to Famagusta with a rental car. At customs you will also pay a mandatory insurance – 25 euros – valid for one month. You can use either Deryneia or Vrysoulles customs.

There is also the possibility to pay for a trip either by minibus or coach, or by double-decker coach. But the latter only works during the summer, as long as the season lasts.

If you didn’t know, Famagusta:

✔It was an important point in the Silk Road. Ships carrying goods to Europe passed through here.
✔The legend says that the city had 365 churches, one for each day of the year.
✔In the years 1300 – 1400 it was the place where rich merchants lived a luxurious life.
